Moving is a big job. Once you’ve packed up all the dishes, clothes, and toys, you’re still left with the big stuff, such as furniture and appliances. Moving appliances is often the hardest and most confusing part of the moving process.

Here’s a guide as to what you should do to prep and move your appliances.

Washing machine

The first thing you’ll want to do is disconnect all the hoses. Use a bucket to drop the hoses in it, in case there’s any water left inside. Wrap the metal ends of the hoses in a towel, and take a moment to go ahead and give the machine a quick cleaning, inside and out. Ensure there’s no water left inside. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to secure the tub, so it doesn’t get damaged during transport. Wrap the machine in a large blanket to prevent damage during the move.

Dryer

Unplug the dryer and ensure there’s no power to it. If it’s a gas dryer, have a professional come out to disconnect it and cap off the gas line. Clean the interior and exterior, and also make sure the lint trap/screen is empty. Wrap it in a blanket to prevent damage.

Stove

If it’s a gas stove, disconnect the gas and make sure it is off.  Have a professional handle this, like the dryer. If it’s electric, unplug it and make sure there’s no power to it. Clean the stove and oven thoroughly, and remove any detachable parts, packing them securely in a labeled box that you keep with the appliances.

Dishwasher

First, turn off both the electric and water supplies. Disconnect the hoses and thoroughly drain them before wrapping them in a towel and placing them in the dishwasher. Leave the door open for a day or two to help the interior dry and to avoid mold or mildew. Clean the interior and exterior if it needs it, and wrap it in a blanket.

Refrigerator and/or freezer

If you have a separate deep freezer, you’ll treat it the same as you would your refrigerator. Unplug the power at least 24 hours before you plan to move it. Remove all food. If it has an ice or water dispenser, disconnect the water line.  Allow time for any ice build up to melt. Thoroughly clean the interior, including all shelves and drawers. Pack loose parts, such as shelves and drawers, in a secured container. Vacuum the condenser or compressor to clear it of dust, and empty and clean the evaporator pan.

Microwave

If the microwave has a glass tray, remove and clean it before securing it in another container. Unplug and clean the microwave thoroughly before packing it in a cushioned carton. A large box lined with thick blankets can work.

Reinstalling your appliances is the reverse order of what you did to pack them up. Hire a professional for any gas appliances, and use caution on the first use.
