Best Neighborhoods in Atlanta GA for Families

Atlanta has been redefining the South for decades while still retaining its southern charm. Although sprawling and constantly developing, a canopy of trees still allows residents to call it “the city in the forest.Living in Atlanta means lots of job opportunities, a mild climate, and the chance to escape on a day trip to the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains or a weekend getaway to a South Georgia island. Atlanta has dozens of great neighborhoods for families. This list will give you a cross-section of what to expect living in an Atlanta neighborhood.

Chastain Park

Centered around Atlanta’s largest city park, living in the Chastain neighborhood means lots of outdoor recreation and chances to form lifelong friendships. The 320-acre park has jogging paths, tennis courts, a golf course, pool, amphitheater and horse park. It’s located about five minutes from the Buckhead business district, and less than 10 minutes from I-285 which circles the city’s perimeter. The public schools here are some of the best in the state. The average home price is around $800,000.

Avondale Estates

Avondale Estates is a large neighborhood with a true village feel. Named after Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England, many of the homes were built in a Tudor-Revival style. This neighborhood made This Old House magazine’s list of “Best Old House Neighborhoods” in 2012.

Residents enjoy easy access to all of Atlanta’s big city activities as well as events within the neighborhood, especially around the holidays. Children can attend the DeKalb County Schools or one of two Georgia Charter schools: DeKalb School of the Arts, and the Museum School of Avondale Estates. The average home price here is just over $300,000.

Inman Park

Located near Downtown, Inman Park is Atlanta’s first suburb developed in the 1880s from land devastated by General Sherman’s army. Consequently, it’s a neighborhood with lots of character. Some of the large Victorian homes have been converted into multi-family dwellings making them a great way for young families to save money and participate in community living.

This friendly neighborhood has plenty of activities for families like the Inman Park Festival and fairs. Children can bike to the Inman Park pool and cool off on hot Georgia days. Locally owned shops and restaurants help to create a small town feel here. The median home purchase price is $312,817.

Druid Hills

Druid Hills is an older, affluent neighborhood and is known as Atlanta’s “second suburb.” It was developed by Joel Hurt who designed Inman Park, Atlanta’s first suburb. Hurt enlisted the help of the same landscape architect that designed landscapes for Central Park in New York City and the Biltmore Mansion in Asheville, N.C. Home styles include early 20th Century Victorian, Tudor, Georgian, Jacobean, and Italian Renaissance.

The neighborhood of about 15,000 is only five miles from downtown Atlanta. Many of the residents are employed by Emory University and the Center for Disease Control (CDC). School children attend the Dekalb County Schools. Residents enjoy recreation at Fernbank Forest and Recreation Center. The average home price in Druid Hills is $457,500.
